REBUILDING BEGINS

ROANOKE RESPONDS TO SERVE WESTERN N.C.

Micro-Mission Trip November 14-16, 2024

Roanoke is responding to the Hurricane Helene disaster. We are takings volunteers to Western NC to continue with this first rebuild phase. In this first phase we are helping to get people back into their homes and make it safe, sanitary and functional (not finished) before the worst of winter. We call these ‘micro’ trips because we are taking small teams of 8-12 people for just three days so that more people have the opportunity to get involved. These trips are sure to make a real, practical difference in the lives of flood victims and will also be good for your own soul! We look forward to making a difference with your help and making memories at the same time.

WHEN: This team will be leaving Roanoke on Thursday, November 14 at 5am from the Exit 140 Park & Ride. We want to arrive in Spruce Pine, NC by 9am. We plan to leave NC at 3pm on Saturday, November 16 and be back in Roanoke by 7pm. We will travel caravan style taking several vehicles. Details on the caravan will be finalized in the days leading up to departure as we know for sure who is going. This caravan approach will give people more flexibility should they need to arrive late or return early.

WHAT: We will be partnering with Baptists on Mission to help rebuild a home and get a family stabilized before winter sets in. We can’t know exact details until we arrive but we want to stay flexible and do what is most needed as determined by the leaders on the ground in Mitchell County. This work is likely to include framing, plumbing, electrical, sheetrock, etc… Volunteers are encouraged to bring any tools that they think will be helpful. If you have a specific trade, definitely bring tools for that. We want to plug people in to their area of strength if possible.

WHERE: We will be working in Mitchell County or Avery County, NC and First Baptist Church of Spruce Pine will be our home base. Sleeping arrangements, showers, laundry-cleaning, and food are provided at the site.

WHAT TO BRING:

  • General Items: Identification, Health Insurance Info, Money, Phone, Charging accessories, Flashlight, Clothing for three work-days plus sleepwear, earplugs, personal toiletries, towel, washcloth, shower shoes, jacket, etc… Roanoke Responds will be providing air mattresses, sheets, and pillows but bring your own sleeping bag or blanket. Check the weather and determine what kind of clothing would suit you best for the days that we will be there. Bring any personal medicines that you need and any food that you need for a special diet or snacks that you want.
  • Work Items: Bring any tools that you think will be helpful. Plan to wear clothing appropriate for a construction site which include long pants, closed-toe shoes, and gloves.

WHO: This team is shaping up to be mostly adults from the Roanoke Valley who have some level of construction knowledge. Construction experience is not required however! Youth that are in 6th grade or older are encouraged to participate as well but must be accompanied by an adult family member.

COST: The cost to secure your spot on the team is a non-refundable donation of $25 per person. The cost is the same for each person regardless of age or amount of time they will be in NC with us. This will help to cover the cost of logistics, travel, lodging, some meals, etc.. Wait to make your online donation until you have contacted us about your spot on the team. See below. Plan to bring additional money for meals or other personal expenses made while traveling. Click here to make your donation.

Space is limited so get your name on the list as soon as possible!  Fill out the form below.  We will follow up with needed info and a short application to be completed.

Thanks so much for your heart for those who have lost so much in NC and for your willingness to go and serve them. We look forward to serving with you!
